Words fail me as I try to come up with the perfect start to a blog about Amitabh Bachchan! Should I write about his epic movie dialogues, his iconic roles, his deep voice or should I write about just how timeless he is? His work and his life story are simply mind-boggling!

Big B has reigned over the Hindi film industry for 50 years and yet he as an actor continues to be more relevant than ever before. Without an ounce of a doubt, the Khans and Kapoors may come and go but Bachchan will never fade away! From Anand, Abhiman, Deewar, Sholay, Agneepath and Amar Akbar Anthony to Sarkar, Black, Cheeni Kum, Paa, Piku and Pink, the way Big B has lent himself to each role is impressive, to say the least.

As India celebrates Amitabh Bachchan’s Platinum Birth Anniversary, I would like to look back upon his amazing journey and draw some important life lessons.

Overcoming rejections like a boss

Amitabh last year shared a picture he had sent for a talent hunt contest organized by Filmfare Madhuri. Big B joked about how he was rejected by the talent hunt judges. He was also rejected by All India Radio’s Ameen Sayani for his different voice. Ameen still reminisces how he had refused to even meet Big B as he didn’t have an appointment. Many critiques called Big B names like lambu tang, and horse face. In spite all the rejections, Amitabh persisted and toiled hard to become the biggest superstar. All his naysayers had more than their foot in their mouths.

Winning the battle for his life

On the sets of the film Coolie, Amitabh Bachchan did an action scene that seriously injured him. A sharp hit to his abdomen had ruptured his smaller intestine. The actor’s life was hanging by a very slender thread for almost 20 days! Tons of doctors were flown in to diagnose Big B’s cause of agony and multiple operations were performed as millions of Indian fans and film fraternity prayed for the actor’s revival. God answered their prayers and the actor got a second lease of life.

From being bankrupt to becoming a crorepati

Kaun Banega Crorepati

Deviyo aur Sajjano, at the age of 57, Amitabh Bachchan had lost everything he had earned. His company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (ABCL) was bankrupt, creditors were knocking on the door for recovery, cases were being filed against him and the court had sent a notice to recover his house. He didn’t have any big movies or ad campaigns lined up to rescue him from the financial crisis. Talk about a crazy rollercoaster ride! From being a B-town A-lister to facing a financial havoc, could normal people like us bounce back? Well Big B did, he rose from the ashes like a Phoenix! Despite advisors asking him to shut down ABCL, he didn’t give up till each and every creditor and employee was paid his/her due. He signed up for everything that came his way – movies, TV shows and ad campaigns.

Spreading a social message

“Do Boond Zindagi Ke”, was the campaign tagline for government’s Polio Eradication campaign and Amitabh Bachchan was its face. For years Big B has headed numerous Social Awareness programs representing the Indian government, various state governments or the UNICEF. He has created awareness and given large sums of donations for children’s rights, upliftment of the girl child, cleanliness, clearing of farmer debts, animal rights and HIV/AIDs eradication program to name a few. He has gone on record to say that he is ready to lend his face and voice to every social cause possible.

75 and still going strong

Still going strong

Big B is now 75 and there is no end to his creativity, his enthusiasm for life and his eagerness to reinvent himself. He is active on Social Media, so much so he tags younger celebrities who forget to reply to his wishes or comments! He takes time out and sends out bouquets to Bollywood newbies, congratulating them on their performances. Despite being a superstar, he tries to take inspiration from his younger co-stars. Every single day, the star still comes out of his bungalow to greet eager fans. Such zest for life is truly inspiring.
